Iroquois Hunting Lodge Day

It was a perfect day for Iroquois Lodge building.  We started out in the woods where the students worked to dismantle last year's lodge.  It was in pretty rough shape.  The children made quick work of  hauling away the large sticks and boughs.  They cleared the old lodge out of the way, leaving behind just the ridge poles.
Students helped John do the "butt-drop" test to ensure that the ridge poles were sturdy.

When we were done, we had built the skeleton of the new lodge.

Scott entertained and informed us about Iroquois life using a number of artifacts.

Trevor learned to make the call of a moose.

The Clan Mother gathered her female cronies for guidance in choosing the next chief.

The girls were charged with choosing a chief who was fair, honest and kind.

Paige was selected to speak for the women.

The women chose the honorable Logan as chief.

Scott introduced various weapons of destruction.

Our class in front of the finished product!

The children were asked to make their scariest faces.

Kerri told us an Iroquois story, and she instructed us in two Iroquois games.

Inside the lodge...

The other groups had time to construct a smaller store house.

Hello Builders,

Today you will have a chance to learn about the Iroquois.  You will build like they built, hear their stories and see the tools and supplies that helped them survive.  I am excited to do all of this with you.  I thank you in advance for being hardworking, tough, considerate and logical throughout the day.

Please move your stick to bringing and head to your desk.  Leave your coat on and take your take home folder, poetry folder and planner out of your bag.  The only thing in your bag should be your lunch and extra clothes and shoes.  No toys or other trinkets should be in there!!

As you wait for announcements and morning movers, please study for Science with a partner at your group.

I expect to hear a wonderful report from Mrs. Olsen about how well you all followed directions.

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

Dear Erosion Experts,

Good morning!  I have high hopes for what we can accomplish this morning.  Please take care of your First 3 and then follow these directions carefully.

As a group, I need you to collect your homework in two piles- one for the a/an page, one for math.  Leave these on one person's desk.  Everyone else should clear off their desk completely.  Then, work as a group to get your stream table set up for our rain experiment.  Set out the white cloth and the stream table.  Then, work together to get your stream table into starting position.  Do NOT get your water yet...you have to earn that!  If all goes well, we can make it rain after Morning Movers!

Hello Students,

I hope your weekend was terrific and candy-filled.  Thanks for being here today for another week of work!  ___Cordelia,  Ella________, ____Logan______ and ____Sydney_____ will share today.

The Kansas City Royals won the 2015 World Series!
Please take care of your First 3 and have your poetry folder on your desk.  You should also read through the new poem a few times.  After that, take some time to fill in your "Books Read" list. Remember, a book only counts if you have the title written correctly and the author's name as well as the number of pages.  Take a minute to pay attention to those details.  Once your list is updated, you can illustrate your poem.  I hope to meet with you this morning to see how many books you read last month!
