13th day of school closing

Happy April,

I really miss you, but I'm kind of glad we are not in school today so you can't play any April Fools tricks on me!  Have you checked Madness Poetry yet to see who won?  You better hop over there to see who earned the trophy!!

Today, you should be working on the Wednesday menu items.  If you haven't finished your Just In Case work yet, you should also be chipping away at that!  I look forward to receiving your essay later today!

There are two class meetings today: at 10:30, I will be helping anyone who hasn't logged into Brainpop yet.  If you need help, come to the meeting at 10:30.  This is optional, if you don't need help, you don't need to come!  Then at 11:30, we will have a morning meeting complete with read aloud and a few guests.

Have a productive day, but be sure to enjoy your family as well!

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

12th day of school closing

Hello Students,

I would like to offer a special happy birthday to Taylor.  I hope you find some ways to make today special!

I am so proud of us for participating in the Madness Poetry Competition right until the end.  If you haven't shared your vote in the Forms app, please use the link on the Learning Menu to place your vote.  The last time I checked, the class was split evenly.  We need more votes so we can choose the winner!

I am so impressed with the work you did yesterday from the Learning Menu.  There are more options for you today.  Head over to your email and then choose some menu items to get started on.  If you need help on your essay, come to the Teams meeting at 10:30.

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

Dear Students,
Hello!  I hope you found some fun things to do at home this weekend.  It is interesting to figure out how to spend our time now, isn't it? I enjoyed making this cool chalk drawing when it was nice out.

The last round of poems are up at This Link from Madness Poetry.  Take a look at the last two poems in the competition.  Please also check your email this morning.  I am excited for you to see the Learning Menu that I build for you.  It will give you some choice in what you do this week.

Some of you still need to send me your math and reading work from last week.  Please work with your mom and dad to send me your Unit 16 work and your reading responses.

I look forward to seeing you at today's class meeting.  Meet me in Teams at 10:00 this morning!

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

10th day of school closing

Happy Friday,

I hope you had a great week.  I look forward to seeing you at 10:00 today for our meeting in Teams.  You still have time to do a few time sensitive jobs before the meeting.  First of all check out the poems at Madness Poetry.  Once you decide which poems you like best, place your vote using This Form.  Please be aware, the website was a bit glitchy yesterday.  I believe it has been fixed.

Next, you should have completed the picture assignment that was listed in Teams.  Go check it out now and try to do it before Morning Meeting.  You will also enjoy this digital citzenship video.

Finally, please take a look in the plastic bag of supplies that I put together for you.  In the bag, you should have found a "back up" book.  Please bring that with you to today's meeting.

We will have a special guest at our meeting.  You won't want to miss this...

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

The next round of poems is available in Madness Poetry.  You will see that there are only 4 poems left.  After you read the poems, place your vote using This Link!

Please check the email from me regarding your work for today.  We will have a class meeting tomorrow (Friday) at 10:00a.m.  I hope you can make it!

Hello Writers,

I hope you are doing well today.  I am glad I got to hear a few more of your voices yesterday!  Today, you should check your email and continue working on your Just in Case work.  I hope more of you can email me your math pages today.  This is helping me to create videos for you.
I need you to click on this LINK to complete a survey.  This should be done with your mom or dad near by.  It will help me to decide on a schedule for our class meetings and our individual conferences.  Please complete the survey by 2:00 today.

Today is Wednesday!  That means you need to spend some time in Write in Word Wednesday.  Once you have done some writing in Word, please share the file with me by clicking on the Share button in the upper left hand corner of Microsoft Word.  I look forward to reading your writing.

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

6th day of school closing

Happy Monday,

I hope your weekend was terrific.  Did you find something fun to do while maintaining a safe social distance?!  I am guessing that you are ready to get into some kind of routine.  I hope that between this blog and your email, we can figure out the best way to communicate.

If you didn't read the blog last week, scroll down to see what you missed.  I am still waiting for some of you to send me an email.  You should also log into the Teams app through Office 365.  That is where we can do a video chat.  I tried it out on Friday with a few of you and it was really cool.  I hope we can meet there again today.

You should be continuing to work on your "Just in Case" folder.  Where are you having trouble?  What is going well?  We can talk about these things when we meet in Teams later.

Please go to Office 365 and check your email.  There, I will give you more directions about what to do today!

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

5th day of school closing

Happy Friday,

It was a week ago that you built your "Just In Case" folder.  It seems like it was forever ago.  I miss your faces!  Even though you haven't been in school, I'm guessing you have learned some things.  Please take a picture or two that represents your learning.  I am hoping you can share it with me later today.

For your school work today, I am hoping you will read the poems in round three of Madness Poetry.  Thank you to Preston, Delaney, Morgan, John W. and Ryan for completing the vote form.  If you haven't done that, please Click Here to share your opinion.

I am looking forward to hearing from more of you via school email.  Scroll down to yesterday's post to find out how to connect through Office 365.  There is a chance we can video chat if enough of you log on to email today!

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

4th day of school closing

Happy New Poem Day!

The next round of Poetry Madness opens today.  Just like before, you can vote on your own, but I hope you will complete THIS FORM so we can vote as a class.  You need to complete the form by 3:00 on Friday.

Many of you have received your computers.  Those of you who haven't received them, you should have them by Monday.  I'd like all to keep working on the items from your Just in Case folder.

Scroll down for a post about essays.  I can't wait to read
one of your personal essays soon!
I'm curious to see if you can figure out how to communicate with your school email.  From our school web page, please go to Student Resources.  Click on Elma, Marilla and Wales.  On the next page, you will see a link for Office 365.  You should be able to log in to Office 365 automatically.  If it asks for a log in and password, you can find this information on a white letter from Mrs. Orrange in your plastic bag.  Go to Outlook and send me an email.  You might even seen an email from me in your inbox.   Please note, I'd like you to use your school email, not a personal email that you might have set up on your own!

I know this remains a strange time.  For some of you, school work can be a great thing to focus on.  I'm guessing you're spending time doing some other things as well...be thinking about what you've been learning so you can take a picture that represents your learning tomorrow!

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

Some of you have asked for the Essay posters.  I will share them with you here.   I am working on a video to support you with the process.  In the meantime, you can be thinking about possible thesis statements.  You are welcome to use mine, "Ice Cream is a tasty treat."  You can change out ice cream for a different tasty treat.  Eventually we will brainstorm new thesis ideas.  I imagine you have some strong feelings about the corona virus or school closings.  What thesis statement might you have on these topics?

3rd day of school closing

Dear Students,
Hello there!  How are you today?  Have you developed a routine for completing school work?  Have you set up a study station for yourself?  If so, please leave a picture of it in the comments below.  You just might inspire others!

Today, your family is able to come to school to pick up your computer and some other supplies.  Once you get your computer, I am hoping to be able to email you and even video chat.  This will be a whole new way to work together.  While I am getting this figured out, please keep making progress on the original work from your "Just In Case" folder.  As questions come up, you can reach out to me via my school email.

While I was at school on Tuesday, I noticed our goal of reading 90 books as a class by the end of March.  I am hoping that you are ready for another book to read.  I included a fresh book for you in your supply bag.  I hope it is one that you can fall in love with over the next few days.

I miss you terribly.  I know this is a strange time, but keep your head up.  We will persevere!

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

2nd Day of School Closing

Happy St. Patrick's Day,

How are you holding up?  I am doing fine.  I go to school today to learn more about how to be your teacher from afar. I am curious to find out what that will entail.  I have heard from your parents that some of you have been very motivated so far.  Great job.  I love to hear that you are setting up Study Zones in your house.  If you have realized that you're missing some things, please have your parent email me so we can get you what you need.

Today, please continue to do a little work from each subject area.  Also be sure to help around the house and get some exercise.  I need to put our class votes in for Poetry Madness by 4:00 today.  If you wish to have a voice, visit Madness Poetry  Keep track of the poets you like, then go to This Link to tell me who you want to vote for.

Have a great day!

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey

1st day of Closing

Dear Students,

Hello....I so wish I was saying that to you in person today.  Thanks for checking out my blog and getting your day started.  I have so much that I want to share with you, but I'm going to try to keep it simple for today.

First of all, please share this link with your parents....Daily Activities During School Closing.  You know how we have our daily schedule in our classroom?  Maybe you can make one of those for home with some ideas from this blog post.  You can even help your parents decide what order to do things in.

Next, the new poems are up in Madness Poetry  Click the link to read and vote.  Include your family in this process.  You can vote with your family's permission in the "community" category.  Keep track of your favorite poems and place your class vote HERE.  You will need to login to your Office 365 account using the big long number from your desk.  That information might be in the front of your planner.  Be sure to complete this form by Tuesday, 2/17 at 4:00.

Finally, take out your Just in Case folder.  Do a little bit of work today.  Remember, one math lesson is only two pages!  If you are looking for some ideas for your writer's notebook, Amy Vanderwater is offering ideas at Sharing Our Notebooks.  Look for her video after 1:00p.m....just in time for writer's workshop like we do at school!

And speaking of videos....I haven't forgotten my promise to read you James and the Giant Peach.  I am trying to work out the details.  Stay tuned.

Have a great day.  I miss you!

Kindly,
Mrs. Harvey
